DIVERSIFIED EDUCATION:
ALTERNATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION: The Alternative Work Experience program is designed to provide the potential school leaver, age 15 and above (grades 9-10), as well as persons at the adult education level with related compensatory instruction, including employability skills and paid employment experiences in the public sector. Opportunities make it possible for the student to obtain competencies and recognition through successful work experiences and to achieve satisfactorily in the school's educational program.

Employment experiences are provided through job placements with the assistance of the alternative work experience teacher. The student acquires competencies through a variety of paid learning experiences. Unemployed students are placed in voluntary assignments in the public sector to develop invaluable work ethics, skills, and attitudes appropriate to the workplace.

DATA: Thirty Work Experience teachers supervised approximately 1,400 students who were enrolled in the program during the 2000-2001 school year. These students represented 23 senior high schools, 42 middle schools, 9 alternative schools, and 14 adult centers.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: During the 200-2001 school year, alternative work experience students were encouraged to affiliate with and participate in the leadership activities sponsored by Career Education Clubs of Florida (CECF) and their Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO). Students who received trophies for having attained one of six top places in their selected area were invited to participate in the State Leadership Conference.

Each year the Annual Employer/Employee Breakfast recognizes employers who hire students in the program. In addition, an outstanding student from each school is selected by his/her teacher to be recognized at the breakfast as that school’s “Student of the Year.”
